2008 Sac Film Fest Starts With a BANG!

Wow, the 2008 Festival started with a huge bang at the Crest Theater Saturday. When I woke that morning I thought "SHIT! I can't be this tired before the actual thing even starts! How am I gonna feel later?"

Luckily for me the day got started right with an enthusiastic crowd for the 'Future Visionaries' showcase and just got better from there!

We were all extremely touched when several former prisoners of Japanese internment camps took the stage to join filmmakers Joe Fox and Adrianne Anderson in a thoughtful discussion of some very complex and impactful issues.

Next we got down country style with my main man, Brian Johnson and the crew from Ranchero....By this point I was feelin the love and already thinkin we had a pretty major film festival on our hands yet the day was just beginning.

When one of the Norcal filmmakers, Cosmos Kiindarius told us that he's seen movies in this theater as a "Skater punk kid" and  and how he never imagined how important it would be to screen here, we were all deeply touched and it kinda elevated the whole day into something really meaningful.

Of course Tahoe Film commissioner Kathleen Dodge was a real sweetheart as she brought treats for our over enthused 48 Hour filmmakers (Class photo above). Finally,  a few die hards ended up with Surreal Cinema. While much of the crowd had already spread out to the "Level Up" after party, those that stayed loved the late night show...One guest, Mike Wilson said "Those movies kicked ass!"

That's just what we do folks...kick ass. There's a whole lot more ass kickin to go so watch for it!

On Saturday, March 29th Film-makers from all over the world will descend on the state capital for the 4th annual Sacramento International Film Festival (SFF). Not to be confused, THE Sacramento Film Festival ™ boasts our region’s premier showcase of international drama, documentaries and American indies.

SFF 08 features the best 'Nor-Cal' cinema as well with such films as ‘Passing Poston/Crossroads in Nihonmachi. These two powerful documentaries, playing March 29th at the Crest Theater chronicle Northern California's role in the displacement of thousands of Japanese Americans during world war II and beyond. Also on the 29th is the outstanding local feature Ranchero and the 48 Hours Sacramento local film competition.

On Sunday March 30th The festival moves to the 24th street theater for a day of Environmental Visions including 8 time Emmy winner Paul Espinoza and his new film the Price of Renewal.

All following screenings are held at the 24th st and feature a diverse mix from a celebration of Cesar Chavez' birthday, (Cine Latino) on March 31st to a riveting examination of Robert Kennedy's death on April 5th entitled Personal Quests For Truth.

Of course no film festival would be complete without special guests, events and parties. SFF 08 will feature education from major Hollywood talent like film composer/editor John Ottman (Superman Returns, X-Men, The Usual Suspects). Also, for the third straight year, aspiring screenwriters will get to test their skills at our annual Pitch Fest with our extra special guest, former UCLA screen-writing dean, Lew Hunter.
